BDEA Admissions "What BDEA Graduates will know and be able to do..." Click here to view BDEA's 2007-2008 competencies in the four content areas. Download the BDEA Application (PDF) Introduction Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) admits students on a rolling admissions basis because of its special population of students. Students can apply throughout the school year through a variety of ways including:
Students must be registered within Boston Public Schools in order to be enrolled in BDEA. After a student’s application is processed and if he/she meets the eligibility criteria his/her name is sent to the Department of Implementation at the BPS. The Department of Implementation notifies the school that the student is enrolled in BDEA. It is important to note that Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) targets students who have not been traditionally successful in school. BDEA uses several methods – both traditional and non-traditional – to recruit potential students. Recruitment Students in the Day Program are recruited in a variety of ways:
Students in the Evening Program are recruited as follows:
Admissions Criteria and Enrollment Policy All applicants to the Boston Day and Evening Academy must be residents of Massachusetts at the time of application. Applicants that do not meet the eligibility requirements will be notified in a timely manner in writing by the school informing them as to why they did not meet these requirements. Day Program
Evening Program
Initial Application Process The application process at Boston Day and Evening Academy spans four to six weeks. The BDEA, in accordance with its nondiscrimination and zero tolerance policy, does not discriminate in its programs, activities, facilities, employment or educational opportunities on the basis of race, color, age, disability, sex, religion, national origin or sexual orientation; and, does not tolerate any form of discrimination, intimidation, threat, coercion, and/or harassment that insults the dignity of others by interfering with their freedom to learn. Timeline for accepting students and reporting pre-enrollment figures The Boston Day and Evening Academy follows all reporting deadlines as set forth by the state’s Office of Charter Schools. Due to the transient nature of the school’s population in both day and evening programs, students are accepted into either program on a rolling admissions (first-come, first-serve) basis through the 15th of April in any given school year. BDEA anticipates that a lottery system for admissions will be implemented in the future.
Lottery System BDEA maintains two grade levels: undergraduate and senior. In the Evening Academy there are approximately 51 senior seats and 154 undergraduate seats. In the Day Academy at maximum enrollment at the Day Academy there are approximately 50 senior seats and 150 undergraduate seats. Because of the nature of the school, the school has never had the opportunity to have a consistent waiting list because of the transient nature of our students. In the event that the school needs to conduct a lottery, notice of the lottery will be given to the public at least one week prior to the lottery. An individual from the Boston Public Schools will be asked to draw the lottery. Siblings of students who are already in attendance in the school in the year of application to BDEA have preference for admission over nonsiblings in all subsequent lotteries. BPS students will receive second preference in admission. If the pool of the applicants exceeds the number of student seats all applicants will be drawn in the lottery and assigned a number. The actual date of enrollment for most students will be the first day of school each academic year. For those students who are admitted on a first come, first serve basis, they will indicate their acceptance within five business days of receiving notification of acceptance. Waiting List Policy The school’s policy on application submitted after the initial application and lottery process is to maintain a waiting list of students and as seats become available draw names in a lottery to fill the available seats. Wait listed students will be informed of an offer of admissions through phone contact and written notification. Students who have declined an offer of admission will be sent a letter confirming that they have declined the offer of admission. The Boston Day and Evening Academy’s policy on the Wait List is that it rolls over from year to year; however the applications are reviewed on an annual basis.
