Math

Mission:

All BDEA students must have access to high-level mathematics concepts and skills that prepare them for higher education and the workplace.  To that end, math instruction at BDEA emphasizes real-world connections, problem-solving, and the use of appropriate technology.

Competencies:

This document outlines the fourteen mathematics competencies that are required of all BDEA students.  While individual benchmarks are listed as steps toward achieving each competency, it is the overall competency that students must demonstrate in order to meet graduation requirements.  Benchmarks are listed developmentally within each competency:  level one benchmarks represent beginning or emerging skills; level two represent competent skills; and level three represent proficient or advanced skills.  In general, an understanding of level one and two benchmarks is necessary for demonstrating a particular competency.

Because math is about problem-solving, questioning, and reflection, students must develop the Habits of Mind that promote critical thinking and inquiry.  These habits are even more important than specific content and computation.  Therefore, in addition to the twelve competencies, BDEA students must also demonstrate these Habits of Mind.
